Vines kill the trees by choking, shading and weiging them down.   This signature tree in Crestwood, NY is virtually overwhelmed by bittersweet, porcelain berry, multiflora rose, honeysuckle & grape.   This is the same silver maple in late winter. Some vines have been cut on the right side.

An increasingly typical view along our roadways. Asiatic Bittersweet vines seem to like the edges of forested areas (like highways) where they get plenty of light.   Bittersweet leaves are often the last to turn. In November the vines are easy to spot because their leaves are still green.   This little-used park bench was left to its fate.   The same bench in early fall reveals the problem. Hard-pressed maintenance crews mow around the bench, but do not have the time or resources to clip the encroaching vines.
